He could not have wanted to provide it if there was no necessity. And now, in his name, oh that I could do it with his voice and with his love and with his fervor! Well, first of all, THE DEATH OF CHRIST AS PRODUCED A POSTERITY. Jesus, as he looks upon them all, can say, "Behold, I make all things new." 6 . But when a man comes to see that he is pardoned and saved through the death of Jesus, he is moved to gratitude, and then to love. The King is not off the ground yet: the battle will be won by his armies. "Now we are told in the gospel that they covered His face and they began to buffet Him. It was as a substitute for sin that he did actually and literally suffer punishment for the sin of all his elect. Then shall he see his seed! The chastisement of our peace "The chastisement by which our peace is effected" - Twenty-one MSS. Verse 18 expresses God's infinite patience and grace. We take life from our parents, this links us with the first Adam: we have taken life from Christ, and this joins us to the second Adam. The work of man's redemption is in the hands of the Lord Jesus, and it is in good hands. Our Lord Jesus died. Isaiah Chapter 2 1 . Dear children of God, do not be afraid that Christ's work will break down because he is dead. Now this is why it is so ridiculous to try to hold the Jews responsible for the death of Jesus Christ and to blame them and to persecute them as has been the history of the church; persecute them for the death of Jesus Christ. The dignity of the person adds a special force to the substitution; and thus one bleeding Saviour can make atonement for millions of sinful men, and the Captain of our salvation can bring multitudes unto glory. The Lord having established the principle of substitution, having provided a substitute, and having through him bestowed upon us gratuitously innumerable mercies, let us observe THAT JESUS IS THE MOST FITTING PERSON TO BE A SUBSTITUTE, AND THAT HIS WORK IS THE MOST FITTING WORK TO BE A SATISFACTION. And yet, it is interesting how so often today we only associate love with physical attraction, and not with the person themselves. Isaiah 53 1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? They claim that in Isaiah 7:14 the word "Almah" is translated as the Greek "parthenos" which they claim means virgin. So as many as saw Him were astonished. Paul said, "For a righteous man some might dare to die: for a good man peradventure some would even give their lives. You may stifle this voice, if you will, but sometimes you will hear it; and terribly and decisively will it speak in your ears to say to you, "Yes, man, God must punish you; the Judge of all the earth cannot suffer you to go scot free." But not for Himself, but for the people" ( Daniel 9:25-26 ). According to the will of God because God loved us. If so, the implication is that Isaiah 52:13-53:12 is about Israel, not Jesus. And we shouldn't seek to blame someone else for our own guilt and to persecute someone else for that for which we are ourselves responsible. His bones are every one of them dislocated, and his body is thus torn with agonies which can not be described. Every form of torture which devils could invent was inflicted upon Christian men and women. Think of the distance, "From the highest throne in glory To the cross of deepest woe,". He hungers; he thirsts, he fears, he weeps, he rejoices, he loves, he dies. The 'suffering servant' song of Isaiah 52:13-53:12 is one of the most significant of Messianic prophecies that we find in the Hebrew Bible. The object therefore is, that we should consider the cause, in order to have experience of the effect; for God appoints nothing at random, and hence it follows that the cause of his death is lawful. Obey the precept, and the promise is yours. It may be that that will be your first response when you see the marks of the suffering that He bore for you. 'Tis manhood suffering there; 'tis the Church suffering there, in the substitute. Thus the name father is often given to the prophets, or to teachers, and the name sons to disciples or learners. For that's the effect of sin. In order to understand this better, we must first know that we are guilty before God, so that we may be accursed and detestable in his presence. 4 Truly he himself carried our sicknesses, +. Christ has died; but still everything that we receive comes to us entirely as a gratuitous outflow of God's great heart of love. [2.] from Jerusalem a passage which nine times mentions and describes the suffering "Righteous Servant" and His substitutionary and sacrificial death for our sins and transgressions. Righteous men know themselves to be sinners: sinners believe themselves to be righteous men. In both the Septuagint and Abinadi's discourse, a singular word is changed to a plural word three times, each when translating a word describing iniquity or sin. That is, really an attractive, desirable or attracting feature. None can dare to say such a thing. But when man turned his back upon God and sinned, fellowship with God was broken. The scripture nowhere says that Christ is his sufferings underwent the wrath of God; but it says here, (1.) There are the Father's arms, and here are you, a black sinner to-night. 10The Lord also is pleased to purge him from his stroke. I have profited greatly from R. R. But it isn't our looks that really attract people.Now if He were one of those beautiful persons, then it would be more difficult for us to identify with Him. He loves his people no less, and he could not love them any more, than when he died for them, and so for ever "he shall see his seed." One effect of Christ's death is the salvation of multitudes. It was a great aggravation of his sufferings that he was numbered with transgressors, that he was not only condemned as a malefactor, but executed in company with two notorious malefactors, and he in the midst, as if he had been the worst of the three, in which circumstance of his suffering, the evangelist tells us, this prophecy was fulfilled, Mark 15:27; Mark 15:28. Now, mark: when you see Christ going up the Mount of Doom, you see man going there: when you see Christ hurled upon his back, upon the wooden cross, you see the whole company of his elect there; and when you see the nails driven through his blessed hands and feet, it is the whole body of his Church who there, in their substitute, are nailed to the tree.
